New Aluminum Metal Plant could be Ohio Valley’s key to Success

In 2018, Braidy Industries will begin to build its new aluminum plant not too far from Ashland, Kentucky, supplying the area with over 500 new jobs and pumping out a whopping 370,000 tons of aluminum sheet and aluminum wire annually by 2020. Most of the aluminum produced will be used for the construction of vehicles and spacecrafts. South Shore, the selected city, is sure to gain much from these plans.

The improvements made to how steel and aluminum are created are mainly thanks to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the team of which has created a method of producing aluminum metal that creates a slightly more lightweight and significantly stronger product than the industry’s current high-strength steel. This new method could soon be implemented in certain factories and leave the rest eternally stagnant. Advancements in the aluminum are comparable to those of the internet in the 1990s.

In terms of clean power to run aluminum and steel plants, Appalachia is a great choice mostly due to its effective electrical power conduction. Not only that, but the potential employees in the area are eager to get back to work. Many of the families those people come from have been employed by either the coal industry or the steel industry in past decades and are hoping for a job comeback in the field.

Unfortunately, the steel and coal industries have been suffering lately, and because they are so closely connected, there’s little that can be done to revive them both. Instead, politicians residing near the Ohio River are seeing the effects and searching for a solution to the job loss problem that resulted from the coal industry’s scrutiny during President Obama’s time in office.

Most American citizens aren’t too keen on seeing expansions occur within the coal and steel industries, but Appalachia is a notable exception. Residents welcome the possibility with open arms, hoping for a series of new jobs and a financial regrowth of the area. In addition to eager potential workers, Appalachia features railway lines, interstate highway proximity, and inexpensive clean energy production.

Two areas that have taken advantage of job loss situations in recent decades and transformed them into booming industry locations are the Raleigh-Dunham region of North Carolina and the now famous Silicon Valley. The former was able to bring together its many university professionals to form The Research Triangle, while the latter experimented with silicon computer chips and came out very successful in its endeavour. Both areas focused on their strengths and turned them into opportunities for their residents and their business partners.

It may seem farfetched, but the Ohio Valley could very well obtain the success in the aluminum industry that the Silicon Valley obtained in the computer industry. Of course, it will take great amounts of time, effort, and dedication, all of which the residents of the area have and will maintain if it means they’ll have access to new jobs. It’s been done many times before and can be done again - they’ll just have to keep moving forward.

3D Printed Aluminum Vehicle released by Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium

Image: 3Dprint.com
Three years ago, Local Motors presented its 3D printed electric car, the very first of its kind. Since then, many transportation devices have been 3D printed, including electric skateboards, electric buses, motorcycles, and new car models from automakers like Honda and Volkswagen. The innovation of 3D printing shows no signs of slowing as the Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium constructed its own double-seated electric vehicle, the frame and interior of which was 3D printed and made mostly from aluminum metal.

Car enthusiasts were introduced to this new aluminum creation when it was put on display for the Taipei AMPA and Autotronics car and motorbike show, held at the Nangang Exhibition Center, associated with and in close proximity to the Taipei World Trade Center.

The consortium’s personal pavilion displayed its recent accomplishments in the realm of research and development, its 3D printed aluminum sheet car accompanied by over twenty of its other new products, which all emphasized the growing popularity of autonomous technology.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs owns the research consortium and is pushing for more advancements in the automotive field as well as stronger international ties. The Ministry’s Department of Industrial Technology encouraged several research companies to form the consortium back in 2005, and it now has six members that work together to find solutions to the many research and development problems institutions currently face.

The Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium quickly became the top research and development organization in the country, and to uphold its title, its members began to focus their efforts on combining widely tested technologies from multiple different sources. This experimentation led to an improvement in the way electric vehicles were created and how they functioned. In the near future, the consortium hopes to develop a collaborative space for research teams, domestic companies, and university staff, which could lead to more breakthroughs in modern technology.

If successful, the consortium could be advancing quickly in the coming years. Its new electric car already features a 6.6kWh lithium-ion battery and a 100km driving capability after a single charging period, reaching a maximum speed of 60kph. The construction of the car, as expected, wasn’t typical. All parts of the vehicle except for the doors were created with a 3D printer. This impressive feat, if implemented regularly, could cut down on the amount of time it takes to build vehicles. Additionally, the electrical nature of these cars would have a positive impact on the environment.

The 3D printed vehicle weighing in at 98,7kg is made primarily of aluminum sheet, the best material for the construction of cars, bikes, planes, and heavy weaponry. If 3D printer vehicles are produced more frequently, manufacturing costs could be only 60% of what they currently are. The consortium plans to do this, but it is unsure as to how soon.

Although the consortium’s 3D printed aluminum vehicle was the most intriguing of its new products, it also displayed its Cooperative Vehicle Positioning System and its Forward Object Detection System, both developed to create safer driving conditions. Most can agree that any new technology is exciting.

The U.S. has the Power to Purify Aluminum for Military Gear

It seems the US is capable of producing high-quality, purified aluminum for military needs at the drop of a hat, despite the recent aluminum trade issue.
The aluminum investigation into China’s imports, begun by the Trump administration in April, was ordered to protect America’s national security against the market’s surplus of cheap aluminum. Reportedly, the investigation was opened in part to determine whether the country’s smelters could work at a production rate to satisfy wartime requirements.
In that scenario, an extra $25 million would need to be put towards fractional crystallization, the ideal way for the US to remove impurities from aluminum. It’s pricey, but it may be necessary in the coming decades.
Surprisingly, under 1% of domestic aluminum in the US is used by the Defence Department, and the country’s stores for the military metal comes out to 75,000 metric tonnes, which could last 2.5 years. On top of this, 117,000 tons are produced annually in the US alone, although Century Aluminum Company in Hawesville is the only high-purity manufacturer within its borders.
Fractional crystallization may sound advanced and expensive, but it would only exceed the costs of normal smelting by about 2%. Primary aluminum now costs $1,906 per ton, while the purified version costs $2,548 per ton. With a reasonable difference, the US will likely opt for the pricier option to protect themselves against any possible war-related occurrences.

Camping Food Ideas Featuring Aluminum Foil

If you’re set on going camping this summer and you don’t know what food or accessories to bring, don’t worry, we’re here to help. Grab your aluminum foil, take a look at our favourite campsite recipes and try a few - you’re sure to love them!
For all the egg-lovers out there, beat two eggs with any veggies or spices you want in them and pour the mixture into a large ziploc bag. Seal and date the bag, keeping it cool until you need it. When you’re at the campsite, boil a pot of water and put the egg bag right in, leaving it there until the eggs are cooked the way you like them.
Take some bananas along to make banana boats. Cut each banana along its natural curve and put some chocolate, peanut butter, or marshmallows inside. Cover it in aluminum foil and place it in the coals of the fire until its contents are melted. Top it with some fresh fruit or cookie crumbs when it’s done.
Do you prefer plantains over bananas? Cut the plantain as explained above and season it with savoury toppings like cheese, onions, and bacon bits - it’ll taste like a baked potato when it’s cooked. Cover it in aluminum foil and let it cook for around forty-five minutes. Top it with chopped tomato, sour cream, or chives when it’s done.
If you’re jonesing for fajitas, place green peppers, black beans, grated cheese, taco sauce, and some chopped chicken or ground beef in the middle of two overlapping pieces of aluminum foil. Wrap the mixture in the foil and cook for around thirty minutes.
For apple cinnamon oatmeal, remove half of the inside of an apple and fill it with oatmeal, cinnamon, brown sugar, and water. Cook the apple in two layers of aluminum foil until soft. Another easy breakfast option is cinnamon rolls, cooked by either wrapping the dough around a skewer or placing the dough inside an orange peel wrapped in aluminum foil.
Cereal eaters can fill a ziploc bag with some cereal and pour it into a plastic drinking cup when it’s time to eat it, adding as much milk as desired. Eat with a plastic spoon for easy post-breakfast clean-up. If you’re a pancake person, bring along a ziploc bag of premixed batter and cut off a corner to squeeze it into an aluminum pan over the fire.
Ice cream cone s’mores are a new take on the fireside favourite that uses an aluminum foil-wrapped cone to hold fruit, chocolate, marshmallows, peanut butter, and even mini cakes. Cook these treats on your fire’s coal until contents are warm. Top them with sprinkles, sweet chips, or your favourite ice cream sauce.
If you’re bringing spices or snacks with you, keep them in recycled containers like glass jars or mint dispensers. Don’t forget aluminum metal skewers to cook meat, vegetables, and marshmallows with. For wooden skewers, soak for half an hour before use to prevent burning. It’s also a good idea to bring along some aluminum wire with you in case you need to tie, fix, or adjust anything in an emergency situation.
With these fun and simple cooking ideas, you’ll look forward to each fireside meal on your next camping trip!

Nail your Backyard Cookout with these Barbecue Tips

Summer is the time of the year when ice cream, shorts, and beach days become the norm. But passionate cooks are undoubtedly most excited to start barbecuing again. If you’re planning a yard party this summer, reduce your stress levels and make your party the best it can be with our cookout tips.

To get your barbecue going, ignite the coals in a discarded egg carton and watch it heat up with ease. Ensure you have enough propane to keep your barbecue up and running for the duration of the party; dousing your tank in hot water and feeling for cold spots, which indicate propane, is a good strategy. A warm tank is an empty tank.

Here’s one of our favourite tips featuring aluminum. Bring out your kitchen’s aluminum foil and crumple the foil up into a ball to scrape down your grill, leaving it clean and clear in no time. If you’re looking to cook more aromatic foods, consider putting whole dried herbs on top of the flames for flavour-infused smoke. For seafood, cut citrus fruits into thin slices and cook the fish on top.

A cookout wouldn’t be complete without hamburgers and hot dogs. Spiral cutting wieners will help them cook more evenly, while making a depression in the center of hamburger patties will allow them to stay the same size and shape as they cook. Before cooking any type of meat, with the exception of fish, let it sit out for twenty minutes or so to allow it to stay juicy.

Grilling veggies is simple with wooden or aluminum metal skewers. Coat them in your choice of seasoning and watch them char beautifully on the grill. Set out a kiddie pool for any accompanying foods you have, like salads, pastas, or fruits, and fill it with ice to keep everything cold.

Muffin holders are great for holding condiments. Put sauces and toppings inside them with spoons for quick distribution and cleanup. If you have chips, fold down the top of the bag so they can be accessed more easily. Both of these tips will save room on the table, too.

When your guests are finished eating, direct them to your labeled garbage and recycling bins so everything goes in the right place. Set out a labeled dirty dishes bin if you used kitchen plates and cutlery. Tidying up becomes a lot less tiring when you plan ahead. Leftover food can always be easily stored in aluminum foil or in an aluminum sheet pan.

Backyard cookouts shouldn’t be a stressful experience - they should be all around enjoyable. By using these tips, everyone will enjoy the food and have fun. Not to mention, you’ll spend way less time cleaning up after your guests leave. Now you’ve got yet another reason to party!

A Look at the Nokia 6 Official Debut

http://www.aaluminum.com/
Through a team-up with HMD Global, Nokia had made it clear that they are ready to get back on the smartphone market. Featuring an Android Nougat and aluminum unibody design, HMD is going to build the phones and Nokia is going to put their brand on them. Will the Nokia 6 be able to grab a piece of the smartphone market? That is going to depend on a number of factors.

One thing’s for sure--the Nokia 6 is something that is definitely worth getting excited about.

The 5.5-inch 1920 X 1080 display is one of the first things to note. It features a 2.5D Gorilla Glass with an 8-megapixel front facing cam. The 16 megapixel camera offers f/2.0 apertures with phase detection auto-focus around back. The snapdragon 430 processors are also appealing, in addition to four gigs of RAM, as well as sixty-four gigs of included storage.

The dual amplifiers are yet another element to the Nokia 6 that turned heads during its recent debut. HMD promises that this phone will offer six dB louder sounds than your regular amps. The company promises that the end result is going to be something that works with higher voices, deeper bass capabilities, and profound clarity. JD.com will handle an exclusive Chinese release in early 2017. The expected retail price for the Nokia 6 is going to be in the range of 246.00. The specs and price are certainly elements that appeal to experts, although some wonder if it will be enough to appeal to the market at large.

Trump Buys $350 Million in Aluminum while U.S. Industry Collapses

http://www.aaluminum.com/
It has lately been discovered that the man that the American people voted for earlier this month to be their Commander-in-Chief for the next four years, Donald Trump, has been doing business that is considered almost unforgivable, with China. Instead of patronizing the local corporations with bases in several states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan that produced aluminum and steel, Mr. Trump, President-elect and one of the richest men in the world, surprised everyone by purchasing about $350 million worth of aluminum from the East Asian country. This was used in the construction of the Trump International Hotel and Tower located in Chicago.

This move makes Americans start questioning his intentions, as he has always reiterated during his political campaigns that he would make sure that he brings jobs back to his homeland.

Trump purchased the aluminum from a company known as Permasteelisa Cladding Technologies, which was a section of an American organization, Permasteelisa North American Corp. Permasteelisa Cladding Technologies imports different metals such as aluminum, steel, etc. from their factories located in China.

This decision to buy and the actual purchasing of aluminum from outside America has had grave impacts on the American metallurgical industries. Another factor which has gone ahead to cripple the steel companies in the United States is the trade dumping tactics employed by Permasteelisa. Trade dumping is a process by which companies unload or flood substantial amounts of products into a market and selling them off for less than the cost it takes to produce such products. This type of marketing strategy has the tendency to not only force business rivals to go bankrupt, but could also put several thousands of people out of jobs as well, and this was what happened. When companies can’t compete by matching prices differences, they end up getting liquidated. It is estimated that at least half of the refineries in America have closed down due to lack of support and business growth. Trade dumping is of immense benefit to billionaires like Donald Trump as he gets to buy the massive amount of metal at an incredibly low price.

Many are pointing fingers at Permasteelisa as the company that is primarily responsible for relieving hundreds of workers of their daily bread while several thousand others are at risk of getting laid off. During the construction of two of his three major construction projects, Donald Trump forsook the purchase and use of steel altogether and opted for cheap concrete instead.

Companies in the United States of America would have gained immense benefit from the $350 million Donald Trump forked over to China. A lot of families would have been saved from being out of jobs. These are the same set of people that Donald Trump claims to be fighting for. He even tried to hide that fact from the American people!

Well, the deed has been done, and Mr. Donald Trump will soon be sworn into office next year. Let’s sit back and watch if he will indeed be ‘tough’ on those countries he lashed out at during his presidential campaigns.

3 Ways To Up-cycle Your Aluminum

Whether you have leftover aluminum scraps from your most recent home improvement project, or you have some soda or food cans you want to re-purpose—your up-cycling options are endless.

Recycle

Aluminum is a metal that is 100% recyclable. Whether you have leftover scraps, sheets, wire, foil, or coil—it can all be recycled at a local recycling plant. Larger pieces may have to be dropped off directly, but smaller pieces can be placed in your standard recycling bins.

Donate To A Local Artist

http://www.aaluminum.com/
If you have leftover colored, clear, raw, or anodized aluminum, reach out to a local artist who can put your excess to good use. Keep in mind that many artists create intricate works of art, such as jewelry, so even your smallest scraps may be just the right size for their upcoming projects.

DIY Arts And Crafts

Whether you enjoy arts and crafts or are looking for something fun to do with the kids—aluminum art is an excellent activity. All you need is a mallet and a metal cutter to get started. Aluminum metal is sharp when cut, and creates slivers and shards, so you must be careful. Anodized aluminum can be harder to cut and shape, but its edges aren’t as sharp. From decorative metal frames and mats for your photos, to intricate designs made from the smallest of scraps.

Accent Your Home

Before you donate or recycle your leftover aluminum, consider if there are any other ways you can use it to accent your home. This versatile metal can be used both indoor, and if anodized, outdoors. Simply look for other areas of you home that can be customized by adding metal detailing. From sheets to aluminum wire welding you have plenty of options for accenting your home.

Absolutely any kind of aluminum metal can be up-cycled or recycled. Allow the tips above to serve as inspiration.

Why Cottage Country Jewelers Rely On Aaluminum Sheet and Wire

Aaluminum Sheet and Wire supplies our versatile range of products to a large range of clients throughout Canada, and North America. While our clients use their aluminum purchases for a wide range of projects, there is a growing demand for aluminum in places like  Muskoka, the Kawarthas, or the Haliburton. Why? Because there is a growing number of jewelers and artists in this area.

Aluminum—The Other Metal

Gold, silver, and platinum are the precious metals that most fine jeweler is made from—but most small jewelers simply can’t afford to work with these metals. However, jewelers still like to work with metals that they can manipulate to create the jewelry they envision—and aluminum is the perfect medium. Not only does it have the durability of metal, but is easily available in numerous mediums—allowing for endless innovation.

Why Aaluminum Sheet and Wire

One of the reasons that cottage country jewelers love Aaluminum, is because we sell smaller batches of aluminum products—at highly competitive prices. While wholesalers can certainly offer lower price points, most jewelers require only smaller amounts of this versatile metal. Not only that, most jewelers work from home, or from fairly small studios that simply can’t accommodate larger wholesale shipments, of say, aluminum sheets. Depending on what a jeweler is in need of, we may even be able to provide a custom order.
http://www.aaluminum.com/

Aluminum Coil and Wire

Aluminum coil and wire are some of our most popular sales items for jewelers. Jewelers twist or weld wire to create intricate patterns and designs. Coil can be used for both mixed medium jeweler, as well as aluminum only. From statement necklaces, to wire decorated rings, earrings, and everything else in-between.

Anodized Aluminum Nameplates and Labels

We offer a large selection of etched and color anodized nameplates and labels. These can be used to create dog tag inspired jewelry for kids, pets, and even adults. The options are endless, and with a jeweler’s creativity—even a standard nameplate can be transformed into a standout design.

4 Ways To Make Your Aluminum Applications Stand Out

Aluminum is such a versatile metal. It is available in sheets, coil, foil, wire, anodized, raw, and even in many colors. This means that our clients have the freedom and flexibility to really experiment with how their aluminum applications, and that they often use aluminum for a dual-purpose of beauty and function. Below is a small selection of some of the many aluminum applications we love.

Aluminum Printing

We have seen a huge increase in artists investing in our aluminum sheets and supplies. This goes far beyond cutting, aging, and painting—and points to a growing trend in aluminum printing. This includes printing everyday photographs on aluminum sheets, to printing out one-of-a-kind digital art.

When printed on aluminum, dye is infused into the aluminum—delivering both vibrant pigments, and a unique finish that only aluminum can deliver.

Pressed or Punched Aluminum Ceilings

Ceilings are an often forgotten area of design, making aluminum applications an easy way to create a stunning focal point. Aluminum ceilings can create both classic and modern designs. From metal sheets pressed in 20s-inspired patterns, to aluminum with funky cutouts hung in a decorative manner on the ceilings.
http://www.aaluminum.com/

The Timeless Aluminum Application—Hammering To Create Texture

Hammered aluminum is a timeless trend. Aluminum can be hammered to create a vintage look, or a contemporary or industrial look. It can be used to add texture to art or personality to furniture or kitchenware. It is also an application that can alter shape and form. Hammering can be done with everything from a wood mallet, standard hammer, or a multitude of innovative texturing tools.

Aluminum Canvas

Aluminum has become an alternate canvas for many painters. Painting on aluminum allows for art that can transition from indoor to outdoor, as long it is properly primed and sealed. Even if it is not apparent that aluminum is the background, painters love mixed mediums—and the unique brush strokes they can achieve when painting on a less standard surface. Those who weld can even create 3D embellishments to apply directly to their multimedia paintings. You can even paint aluminum siding.

The sky is the limit when it comes to aluminum applications. New aluminum applications across a multitude of industries are constantly being discovered. It is always our goal to provide you with aluminum products that are both high-quality and competitively priced. If you have any questions about our products, just let us know.
